Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT)
Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) is a widely researched and therefore evidenced-based treatment for many common mental health problems (e.g. anxiety and depression). When using CBT the psychologist works with the client to identify and explore their difficulties in terms of the relationship between thoughts, feelings and behaviours. CBT considers the thinking patterns/styles that may be contributing to the individual's distress as well as behaviours that might also be maintaining the difficulties.
Clients engaging in CBT often have specific difficulties that they are seeking support with. This enables the therapy to remain focused and helps the psychologist and client to set specific therapeutic goals. Developing strategies for managing difficulties and acquiring new skills is a main focus of CBT.
